Reuben Pali recognized that this important Hawaiian tradition was not being taught to the current generation of keiki in Lahaina. Music programs at the elementary school level are virtually nonexistent as well. In January 2015 he formed Maui Music Mission with help from wife, Ronda. They offered ukulele lessons in the park next to the school, and soon had a following of a dozen keiki. They moved the mission into the Hawaiian Cultural Center across the street and then created new programs like ‘Spring Break Music Camp’, ‘Instrument Petting Zoo’, ‘Christmastown’, and a FREE 2-week summer music program, “Spirit Music Camp’.
Community support has made it possible for the mission to grow while maintaining minimal participation fees. Maui Music Mission is now located in it’s own studio location at 930 Wainee Street in Lahaina, where three classrooms are dedicated to full-time music instruction.
